State Department Cohosts Private Sector Summit
On Public Diplomacy
On January 9-10, the U.S. State Department and the Public Relations Coalition hosted a summit to identify clear action steps for greater private sector involvement and support for U.S. public diplomacy. In her remarks to the group, Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Karen Hughes noted “without a doubt, that our exchange programs have been our single-most effective public diplomacy tool of the last 50 years.”


House Introduces Bill Limiting Enforcement on Cuba Travel Restrictions
U.S. Representative Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) on January 4 introduced a measure to prevent the U.S. Department of Treasury from using funds to enforce regulations prohibiting travel to Cuba for educational purposes. This is the third year such a bill has been proposed in the House.


Nominate NAFSAns for 2007 Advocate of the Year Award
The Advocate of the Year Award is a new annual award that recognizes an international education advocate who has excelled in grassroots advocacy. If you have been inspired by a NAFSA member who has effectively engaged his or her elected officials on international education issues, nominate him/her by January 31, 2007.
