THIS WEEK IN INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION
Accountability in Education: Lessons from Europe?
The Institute for Higher Education Policy argues that the United States should look to Europe for lessons on higher education accountability. Reported July 28 in both Inside Higher Education and The Chronicle of Higher Education (subscription required), the white paper looks to the Bologna Process to stimulate discussion in the United States. NAFSA's International Educator also reported on the European qualification framework in its July/August 2008 issue.

New Paper Highlights United States-China Exchange
The current state of U.S.-China educational exchange is the topic of a new briefing paper developed by the Institute of International Education (IIE).

Coping with Unfavorable Currency Exchange Rates
An article in USA Today examines the impact of the weak dollar on U.S. students pursuing education abroad in Europe, and offers several tips for saving money when exchange rates are unfavorable.

ASSOCIATION NEWS
Last Chance: Submit 2009 Annual Conference Proposals
Submission deadline August 1. Don't delay! Submit your proposal today for a workshop, seminar, or session for NAFSA's 61st Annual Conference & Expo, "Fostering Global Engagement through International Education." The deadline for submissions is Friday, August 1, 11:59 p.m. EDT. Visit the Call for Proposals for additional information.

NAFSA Announces Annual Fund Raffle Prize Winners
Donors contributed close to $25,000 toward NAFSA's 2008 annual fund campaign during NAFSA's 2008 annual conference. NAFSA extends its congratulations to winners of the fabulous prizes raffled off in Washington, D.C. NAFSA thanks those organizations who generously contributed raffle prizes and would like to encourage others to spotlight their products and services by donating a raffle prize for the 2009 annual conference.

GOVERNMENT AND PUBLIC AFFAIRS UPDATE
Vote to Advance Simon Bill Fails in the Senate
A Senate vote on July 28 to advance the Advancing America's Priorities Act, which included the Simon bill, failed by a vote of 52-40. Thank you to the nearly 900 people who sent letters to their senators in the past few days to support this legislation. We will keep you updated on future opportunities to support the Simon bill.

SEVP Q&As Provide Guidance on OPT Rule, SEVIS
While the official updated Policy Guidance on the optional practical training (OPT) rule is still making its way through the government approval process, the answers to many of your questions are now available on NAFSA's Web site. NAFSA has posted the Q&A from the monthly July SEVIS Teleconference and a Quarterly Stakeholders Teleconference held in July, as well as transcripted answers from questions submitted for NAFSA's 2008 Annual Conference session titled "SEVIS Q&A with SEVP."

CampusFrance Resumes Two-Week Processing Times
It's that time of summer again! After a brief period of delays, CampusFrance reports that processing times are back to the two-week turnaround time. CampusFrance also provides practice tips for advisers and students on planning the timing of applications and contacting CampusFrance.

Send in Your Questions for USCIS Service Centers
Over the next two months, NAFSA leaders and liaison staff will be meeting with officials at the California and Vermont Service Centers. In addition, the Nebraska Service Center will be holding its Quarterly Stakeholders Teleconference on Student and School issues. Please submit your questions and concerns for the Service Centers to IssueNet: Report an Issue.
