Lieutenant Governors Association Calls for International Education Policy
The National Lieutenant Governors Association (NLGA) last week passed a resolution supporting the establishment of a national policy on international education. The resolution urges the U.S. presidential candidates to outline their plans for a national international education policy and calls on state governments to support international education at the state level.


Japan to Boost Foreign Student Enrollment
The Japanese government has announced plans to triple the number of foreign students enrolled at Japanese universities.


China to Increase Scholarships for Foreign Students
China has announced plans to increase the number of scholarships it provides to international students over the next few years.

Mark Your Calendar--Two Webinars in September
Mark your calendar--two NAFSA webinars are coming up soon. "Financial Aid and Study Abroad: What High School Counselors Need to Know," scheduled for September 12, 2008, will examine how to help students make the right choices so their dream study-abroad experience has a greater chance of becoming a reality. "Just a Quick Question," scheduled for September 24, 2008, will explore the integration of three primary dimensions in responding to questions from international students or scholars: intercultural communication, immigration guidance, and decisionmaking.


GOVERNMENT AND PUBLIC AFFAIRS UPDATE
Congress Passes Higher Education Reauthorization
After months of negotiations, Congress passed a bill last week to reauthorize the Higher Education Act of 1965 for another five years. Read a summary of the provisions on international education.


SEVIS Release 5.10 Training Presentations
In anticipation of the estimated production release of SEVIS 5.10 on August 8, 2008, the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) and the Department of State have developed two PowerPoint training presentations. See NAFSA's SEVIS Release 5.10 Information Page for links to the PowerPoint presentations and other SEVIS 5.10 resources.

Deadline November 28, 2008. Nominate your institution for the Senator Paul Simon Award for Campus Internationalization. This award recognizes institutions for overall excellence in internationalization efforts as evidenced in practices, structures, philosophies, and policies.
