THIS WEEK IN INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION
UK to Tighten Student Visa Restrictions
The United Kingdom has announced that it will tighten restrictions related to its student visa system. Read what this may mean for international students and institutions in articles from The Guardian and The Times Educational Supplement. Learn more about the proposed changes in a UK Border Agency document.

CIA Director Stresses Importance of Foreign Language Learning
In an address to educators attending the CIA Foreign Language Summit, which was held last week at the University of Maryland University College, CIA Director Leon Panetta said that multilingualism is key to U.S. economic interests, diplomacy, and national security, according to a report in Diverse: Issues in Higher Education. He called for the United States to require foreign language study at an early age, and said that language training should be a college graduation requirement.

Fewer Foreigners Earn Science Doctorates at U.S. Universities
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has released a report showing that despite an overall increase in the number of doctorates awarded in 2009, the number of doctorates in science and engineering earned by international students at U.S. institutions has dropped for the first time in five years. Learn more on the NSF Web site and in a Chronicle of Higher Education article.

ASSOCIATION NEWS
NAFSA Internationalization Initiatives Ramp Up in 2011; Hudzik Appointed Senior Scholar
Continuing its active contribution to internationalization of higher education, NAFSA will launch a number of new initiatives in 2011. John K. Hudzik, PhD, currently a professor and formerly vice president for global engagement at Michigan State University, has been appointed NAFSA Senior Scholar in Internationalization and has authored a new e-publication on comprehensive internationalization that will be released in early 2011. Stephen Ferst Named Chair of 2013
Annual Conference Committee
Stephen Ferst, director of institutional relations and development for The Education Abroad Network, has been appointed chair of the 2013 Annual Conference Committee by Meredith McQuaid, 2011 president and chair of NAFSA's Board of Directors. Dr. Ferst has worked in international education since 1989 as an adviser, recruiter, resident director, program officer, and director. He has played an active role in NAFSA, as chair of the NAFSA Knowledge Community for Education Abroad, Annual Conference Content Team chair for 2011, New Jersey state whip, and recipient of the 2008 NAFSA Advocate of the Year Award. We congratulate Dr. Ferst and look forward to his leadership for the 2013 Annual Conference & Expo in Louisville, Kentucky.

Give to NAFSA this Holiday Season
Every day international education makes a meaningful difference in the lives of thousands of students. NAFSA provides the opportunity for international educators to access resources to help students become the next generation of global citizens. Read NAFSA President Christopher Viers' letter about one such student and make a gift to NAFSA's Annual Fund drive before December 31.

Registration for Advocacy Day 2011 Now Open
Register today for NAFSA's annual Advocacy Day, which takes place March 15-16, 2011, in Washington, DC. This event will help you build relationships with members of Congress and their staff while helping shape the discussions on the future of international education. Check out the NAFSA blog to read about one member's connection at Advocacy Day and how it resulted in her being asked to share her thoughts on an immigration bill that her senator was planning to introduce.

GOVERNMENT & PUBLIC AFFAIRS UPDATE

Let your senators know that you support this important piece of legislation! To learn more, visit the DREAM Act campaign page on Connecting Our World.
