How do I access the Adviser’s Manual Online?

Access to the Manual is available in the form of two kinds of User Licenses: Principal User Licenses and Additional User Licenses. The basic unit of sale is the one-year Principal User License, which gives a single individual access to the Manual for the duration of the license. The Principal User License holder can also purchase optional Additional User Licenses, and assign them to others at his or her institution.

The Principal User License holder and those whom he or she has assigned to Additional User Licenses will access the Manual using their standard NAFSA ID and password that's used for all other purposes on the NAFSA site. No other special passwords or Web access certificates are needed. Just go to the NAFSA Web site at www.nafsa.org, log in to the site, and click on the Adviser's Manual button in the left navigation menu. If you don’t remember your NAFSA ID or password, go to www.nafsa.org/emailpassword.

How do the Principal and Additional User Licenses work?

The Principal User License is attached to the NAFSA database record of a particular individual, and is valid for a period of one year. A Principal User License holder may buy any number of Additional User Licenses. After purchasing them, the Principal User License holder can freely assign each additional license to particular individuals.

Assigning and reassigning Additional User Licenses is an easy process, done in the user-friendly "My Account" section of the Adviser's Manual Online. Additional User License designees will have access to the NAFSA Adviser's Manual for the same amount of time as the Principal User License holder.

Only individuals who have a NAFSA Username and Password can be assigned as an additional user. You don’t have to be a NAFSA member to have a NAFSA Username and Password. If an individual has ever been a NAFSA member, attended a NAFSA conference or workshop, or bought a NAFSA publication, he or she probably has one already. If the person you’d like to add does not have a NAFSA Username and Password, then it’s easy to create one. Have that person click the Login button on the NAFSA home page, then on the page that appears, click the Create Account button. Once the ID is established, you’ll be able to assign him or her as an additional user, and as soon as you do, that person will be able to access the Adviser’s Manual Online using his or her own NAFSA Username and Password.

How will I know what's been updated in the Manual?

Changes to laws and policies, as well as new insights in areas of practice, may lead to revision of the Adviser’s Manual Online content. Content revision is a process, and often requires research, analysis, clarification from the government, and consultation with content experts, before changes to the Adviser's Manual Online are made. While the analysis takes place, you will be made aware of changes that impact the content of the Manual by news items posted on the Manual's online news and updates page.

When we complete and upload content changes to the Manual, we e-mail notification to each Principal License Holder and his or her designated Additional Users, and post hyperlinks to the changed sections at the beginning of each chapter and are compiled on the Chapter One landing page that appears after launching the Manual. A summary of the changes is also announced in NAFSA.news. Here is a list of the most recent changes.

If I subscribed to the Manual before it went online, how do I renew?

If you had a subscription to the Manual in your name that was current at the time the Manual went online in June 2007, you were automatically given a Principal User License giving you access to the Manual in its new online format for the duration of that subscription, at no extra charge. If you had multiple subscriptions under your name, you were given Additional User Licenses equal to the number of your current additional subscriptions. To access the Manual, and to assign any Additional User Licenses you might own, just go to the NAFSA Web site at www.nafsa.org, log in to the site, and click on Adviser's Manual in the left-hand navigation menu.

A series of three renewal invoices will be mailed to you, at 90, 60, and 30 days before your principle user license expires. You will be invoiced for your current configuration of principal user licenses and additional user licenses.

How can I check whether I have an Adviser's Manual license already?

To check whether you have an Adviser's Manual Principal User License or whether someone has assigned you to use an Additional User License, just log in to the NAFSA Web Site. Towards the bottom of the MyNAFSA page, you will see a license comment that describes your license status. No comment will appear if you do not have a current license, or if you have not been designated as an additional user.

How do I get a paper copy of the manual?

Given the pace and scope of changes in law, policy, practice, and our own understanding of these changes, a Web-based product was selected as the best way to meet our responsibility to provide the most accurate and up-to-date information. At the same time, we recognize that some of our customers may want to have a print version, so we offer a Desk Edition option. To ensure the best, most accurate information, though, a print version whose content is static has been positioned as a secondary tool, made available only when we are sure that a customer has access to the best information, which is maintained online.

The content cut-off for the 2007 Desk Edition was June 28, 2007. Since that time, a number of content changes to the Adviser's Manual Online have been made, and those changes are not included in the Desk Edition.

When the 2008 Desk Edition is published, information about how to order will be added here and notice will be e-mailed to Principle Users.

How can I transfer my Principal User License to someone else in my office?

Request a Principal User License transfer using the Adviser's Manual Feedback Form, available at www.nafsa.org/AMContactUs. In the body of the message, include the name and NAFSA ID of the current Principal User License holder and the name and NAFSA ID of the individual to whom you would like the license transferred.
