SSA rule restricts issuance of SSNs for non-work purposes
The Social Security Administration (SSA) published a final rule that restricts the assignment of Social Security Numbers (SSNs) to aliens for non-work purposes; the rule limits assigning SSNs for non-work purposes to situations where a federal statute or regulation, or a state or local law, requires the alien to have an SSN in order to receive a benefit.
