2018 Award Recipient

Shelby Lewis is professor emeritus at Clark Atlanta University. She began her professional career as an education officer for United State Agency for International Development (USAID) projects in Uganda. In the following years, she was a Senior Fulbright Scholar; Fulbright Specialist; Council for the International Exchange of Scholars board member; J.W. Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board vice chair; university professor and administrator; and an international education contractor with USAID, United Nations Development Programme, universities and non-governmental organizations like the United Negro College Fund Special Programs, Inc., where she managed university partnerships in 32 countries and organized international workshops. Lewis established an Africana women’s studies program, an international center, and study abroad and university linkage programs at Clark Atlanta University. She also served as president of the National Conference of Black Political Scientists and the African Heritage Studies Association.
