Keynote Speaker

Marylou Yam, PhD
President, Notre Dame of Maryland University

Marylou Yam is the 14th President of Notre Dame of Maryland University. She leads the only women’s college in Maryland, which was established more than 120 years ago as the first Catholic college in the United States to grant the four-year baccalaureate degree to women. Yam joined the Notre Dame community from Saint Peter’s University where she most recently served as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. As the first woman in the history of Saint Peter’s to serve as Dean of its College of Arts and Sciences and School of Business Administration, and through her previous role as Associate Dean of Nursing for Saint Peter’s University, Yam exemplifies Notre Dame’s mission of preparing leaders to transform the world and its active and longstanding commitment to social responsibility. She played a key role in the expansion of Saint Peter’s from a college to a university and was instrumental in the establishment of its first two doctoral programs and its Schools of Nursing and Education. She created the university’s Center for Global Learning and launched the English Language Learning and Culture Acquisition Center. Yam earned a B.S. in Nursing in 1981 from Mercy College and M.A. and Ed.M. degrees in Nursing Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. In 1993, she earned a Ph.D. from Adelphi University. In 2002, she was awarded a post-doctoral fellowship at The Johns Hopkins University. Throughout her career has been a staunch and vocal advocate for the essential role of a liberal arts foundation in professional education.
