Thank you for your interest in the My Cultural Awareness Profile (myCAP©) Suite of Resources. Please note that these products have been discontinued. For questions, please contact NAFSA's Academic Affairs and Internationalization staff.
The foundation of the myCAP© Suite of Resources is built on the myCAP© Instrument, an interactive, online survey intended for use by teacher instructors and other instructors to assess students across the three dimensions:
- Understanding of cultural and global contexts;
- Integration of global and cultural perspectives in the curriculum;
- Responsiveness to the influence of culture on teaching and learning.
The myCAP© Instrument is supported by three informative guides designed to help facilitate the use of the myCAP© Suite of Resources:
- The myCAP© Instructor Guide
- The myCAP© Self-Reflection and Discussion Guide
- The myCAP© Cultural Learning Action Plan
All three resources are provided to instructors who register a course for the myCAP© Instrument.
The myCAP© Instrument is an online survey with 18 items. Individuals completing the survey are asked to respond to prompts which describe perceptions and attitudes about culture, the global context, and the impact of culture on teaching. A report is generated upon completion of the survey that analyzes responses and provides prompts on how to build awareness.
When to Administer the myCAP© Instrument?
This online survey can be administered before and after specific courses or experiences dedicated to cultural growth and enhanced global awareness, such as at the start and end of a program of study; before and after an overseas study experience; or at other appropriate intervals.
Validation of the myCAP© Instrument
The items generated within each dimension of myCAP© were formally reviewed by a panel of judges who specialize in teacher education and intercultural research. The items were constructed as statements to which individuals respond on a four-point Likert scale (Agree, Somewhat Agree, Somewhat Disagree, or Disagree). Students select the response that best describe their views at that given point in time, based on their cultural and global awareness.
During the content validation process, judges reviewed a total of 38 items that were then administered to teacher education candidates from across the United States. Items were submitted to a confirmatory factor analysis to determine their relationship to the dimensions and validated using Cronbach’s alpha internal consistency reliability coefficients following the myCAP© pilot administration. The Cronbach’s alpha for the overall instrument is .835.
Individual and Group Reports
After each administration of the survey, individuals receive a myCAP© report that encourages them to consider their own development over time and provides tips on how to further that development. A consideration of student response patterns across the group reports are intended to provide teacher educators and other instructors with the opportunity to better understand their students’ current levels of cultural awareness and adjust instructional aims to best address their intercultural developmental needs. Data may be used to document student learning for accreditation purposes and other program and curriculum reviews.
myCAP© Instructor Guide
The myCAP© Instructor Guide is for teacher educators and other instructors to facilitate the use of the myCAP© Suite of Resources in their programs. It provides resources for promoting the cultural awareness and development of preservice and in-service teachers, as well as recommendations for preparing them to teach in diverse classrooms. The guide offers innovative ways to use myCAP© in their programs to encourage reflection.
The myCAP© Instructor Guide is provided to instructors via digital download after they register a course for the myCAP© Instrument.
myCAP© Self-Reflection and Discussion Tool
The myCAP© Self-Reflection and Discussion Tool is an instructional resource to support cultural reflection and conversations. This myCAP© tool consists of 15 survey-style questions and six short-answer reflection prompts. It is important to note that the questions were not written to assess cultural awareness. Rather, the myCAP© Self-Reflection and Discussion Tool questions serve as a means of encouraging self-reflection and generating conversation and inquiry. Responses should not be considered right or wrong, but rather as opportunities for self-exploration and as avenues for identifying future learning objectives.
Although it should not be used as a summative assessment vehicle, instructors can use the myCAP© Self-Reflection and Discussion Tool as a resource for formative assessment of preservice and in-service teachers. (In contrast, the myCAP© Instrument is designed as a summative assessment vehicle.)
A digital download of the myCAP© Self-Reflection and Discussion Tool is made available to instructors after they register a course for the myCAP© Instrument.
myCAP© Cultural Learning Action Plan
The myCAP© Cultural Learning Action Plan offers an action-oriented plan for students based on the idea that preservice or in-service teachers must have significant experiences that will move them forward in their intercultural and professional development.
Using the myCAP© Cultural Learning Action Plan, students work toward developing their cultural learning through:
- creating personal learning goals;
- taking action;
- developing contextual thinking;
- practical planning; and
- documenting cultural learning.
A digital download of the myCAP© Cultural Learning Action Plan is made available to instructors after they register a course for the myCAP© Instrument.
