What's
Up With Culture? is a free online cultural training resource designed
to support and enhance the cultural adjustment of U.S. students participating
in a study abroad experience.
What's Up with Culture? includes three
modules:
- What to Know Before You Go
- Welcome Back! Now What?
- a glossary/bibliography.
Each module is self-guided
and self-paced and contains material and exercises intended to spark students'
understanding of key intercultural communication topics and how they impact
their own experiences and learning abroad, regardless of their destination.
Educators and advis e rs may also use the activities in order to facilitate
student reflection as part of orientation programming in any phase of study
abroad from predeparture through reentry. You can also access the What's
Up With Culture? user guide (44kb ).
The site is the work of NAFSAn Bruce La
Brack, and is organized around materials collected and developed over 30 years
of offering cross-cultural courses at the University of the Pacific,
specifically the linked orientation and reentry courses of the School of
International Studies (SIS). It also includes materials adapted with permission
from the Peace Corps' "Culture Matters" workbook.
The project was
funded in part by a U.S. Department of Education FIPSE (Fund for the
Improvement of Post-Secondary Education) grant from 2000-2003.
