Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) can facilitate highly effective, cost-saving, measurable global learning. A COIL learning environment uses innovative technology to integrate global learning into the curricula of students who may be place or time-bound. COIL courses can be launched in all disciplines and facilitating interdisciplinary connections can be particularly effective in allowing students to make unique insights. Faculty and Senior International Officers (SIO's) use this innovative pedagogy to deepen the global engagement of students, utilizing cost-effective technology to link university classes in different countries.
Join NAFSA Academic Programs for the fourth session in our six-part Architecture for Global Learning - Series II. Participants will learn practical examples of co-created curriculum and activities that get students engaged in "big" problem solving with their international peers. Explore the research and practice of experts who are already combining global learning pedagogy with COIL and discuss ways that this exciting combination can be implemented at your institution.

SUNY Cortland, Syracuse University
Julie Ficarra studied networked learning and partnership development as part of her master’s degree in international education policy at Harvard and has since served as the coordinator for international collaborations at the SUNY COIL Center; taught her own COIL course at Syracuse University with the American College of Sofia, Bulgaria; consulted on embedding COIL activities into pre/during/post education abroad experiences; and recently served as a mentor for IIE’s Connecting with the World: International Relations for Higher Education Institutions online course.
She has worked in international education at several US institutions, and was an Una Chapman Cox Fellow at the U.S. Department of State where she held assignments in the Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs as well as in the Public Diplomacy Section of the U.S. Embassy in Mbabane, Swaziland. Julie is currently a PhD candidate in cultural foundations of education at Syracuse University and the associate director of study abroad at SUNY Cortland.
Francesca A. Cichello
SUNY Empire State College
Cichello is executive director of international education at the State University of New York, Empire State College. She manages a global network of programs in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Latin America. For over a decade, Cichello has spearheaded Collaborative Online International Learning efforts within Empire State College and has particular expertise in hybrid teaching and learning models that blend international distance learning and classroom-based instruction. Her research interests include the internationalization of higher education and American education within the global context. She attended Skidmore College (BA) and Union College Graduate School, now Clarkson University (MAT).
Stephen Tippett, PhD
SUNY COIL Center
A staff member of the SUNY COIL Center, Tippett’s duties lie at the intersection of instructional design, technology in education, and project management. Currently, much of this work is in faculty professional development programs for COIL course design. In fall 2017 he completed his doctoral dissertation at the University of Delaware on the instructional design of embedded study abroad courses. Tippett has worked in international education for 10 years, several of which were in South America, first in Ecuador with WorldTeach and then in Chile with the United Nations Development Programme and the Ministry of Education.
