New technologies in the workplace have simplified the way international educators communicate with students and manage their daily workload. Even with these advances, however, many professionals are not aware of practical techniques for maximizing the capabilities these tools offer that can make their jobs easier and save valuable time.
How can your office get the most out of its existing technology in order to streamline day-to-day tasks? What other tools can your office use to improve student outreach and advising processes?
In this NAFSA e-Learning Seminar, presenters will discuss how they use technology in their offices to enhance efficiency, highlight lesser known services and their benefits, and teach participants helpful “hacks” for commonly used software and applications for task management, such as the Microsoft Office Suite and Google Apps.
After attending this NAFSA e-Learning Seminar, participants will be able to:
- Identify new techniques for using key technology tools in international education offices;
- Simplify the internal management of applications and records through technology systems;
- Create efficiencies in student advising through the use of technology; and
- Provide examples of implementation strategies for new technology in various international education offices.
The content of this seminar will be relevant to international educators in all fields and departments.
Oregon State University
Elizabeth B. Mills is the manager of international internships within the Office of Global Opportunities at Oregon State University. Previously, she worked as the coordinator of international education programs and outreach at the University of Tampa. Throughout her career, she has worked to build programs for study abroad students, strengthen international partnerships, and manage on-campus internationalization efforts. Her research interests include student engagement within international programs, risk management within study abroad, enhancing experiential education outcomes, and marketing study abroad to student populations. A technology enthusiast, she has served as a social media manager for the NAFSA Technology Member Interest Group and has presented and written on increasing office efficiency through technology use and on using technology channels to engage learners abroad. She holds master’s degrees in marketing and instructional design and technology.
University of Texas-Dallas
Shau E. “Eve” Su is technology manager for the University of Texas-Dallas International Center (IC), where she evaluates and develops IC technology, and supervises the IC technology team to support the center’s needs in marketing, data analysis, and virtual tools development. Su started her career in international education as a designated school official at Texas A&M University-Commerce (TAMUC) in 2005, and joined the University of Texas-Dallas International Students Services Office in 2008 as technology coordinator . Born and raised in Taipei, Taiwan, Su received a master of science degree in management information systems from the University of Houston-Clear Lake in 2000, and a master of science degree in learning technology and information systems from TAMUC in 2003. She also holds a doctor of education degree in supervision, curriculum, and instruction in higher education from TAMUC.
Michigan State University
Hersh Sisodia is an international student advisor at Michigan State University (MSU), where he leads the F-1 immigration team. Sisodia has a background in communication, usability, and technology implementation, and holds an MA in educational technology from MSU. His graduate studies focused on incorporating technology into various learning environments. Sisodia has presented at regional conferences on incorporating technology into work environments for effective communication with international populations, and has conducted F-1 workshops at both regional and national NAFSA conferences. He is always looking for creative ways to utilize technology to communicate with and educate MSU's international population.
