NAFSA’s 2016 Symposium on Leadership, Leading Internationalization: Changing Demographics and Economic Realities, was held at the 2016 Annual Conference & Expo, and explored how senior international officers and higher education leaders balance competing interests and pressures in the face of changing demographics and economic realities.

The event featured Alex Usher, president of Higher Education Strategy Associates. He led off the event by looking ahead at the shape of things to come and the role of internationalization in times of change.

A panel discussion followed, providing institutional perspectives from three distinct regions. Panelists included José Celso Freire, Jr., associate provost for international affairs at Sao Paulo State University and president of the Brazilian Association for International Education, Laura Howard, lecturer at the Universidad de Cádiz and president of the European Association for International Education, and Ashish Vaidya, provost and vice president for academic affairs at St. Cloud State University.

The event wrapped up with a panel of senior international officers sharing lessons learned from the field, with Douglas Palmer, vice president for academic affairs and associate professor of history at Walsh University; Kavita Pandit, associate provost for international education at the University of Georgia and member of the NAFSA board of directors; Mike Proctor, vice president for global initiatives at the University of Arizona; and Jeffrey Riedinger, vice provost for global affairs at the University of Washington and member of the NAFSA board of directors.
