Due to new White House policies that may affect international students' perceptions of the United States as a destination of choice, many in the international enrollment management (IEM) community may be facing challenging times as they travel abroad to recruit new international students and speak to parents and families about studying in the United States.
NAFSA's International Education Town Hall events are a series of online forums designed to bring together the international education community in a time of uncertainty and change. This town hall will focus on:
- Sharing outreach and communication strategies;
- Balancing personal opinions versus representing your institution;
- Resources and model practices to respond to the changing environment; and
- Advocacy tools to help you champion international activities.
This one-hour virtual event is offered free of charge and open to anyone in the international education community. A recording of the event will be available shortly after the event ends.

David Di Maria, PhD
Montana State University
David L. Di Maria is associate provost for international programs at Montana State University, where he is responsible for advancing the international dimensions of learning, discovery, and engagement. Di Maria is a recipient of NAFSA Region VI’s Advocacy Award, past-chair of NAFSA's International Enrollment Management Knowledge Community, and the current president of the American International Recruitment Council. He is also the editor of Managing a Successful International Admissions Office: NAFSA’s Guide to International Admissions, which is scheduled for publication later this year. He earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro and a doctorate from the University of Minnesota. His dissertation focused on campus services for international students.
Jessica Sandberg’s career in international education spans more than 15 years. She joined Temple University in 2012 as the institution’s first director of international admissions. Previous experience includes international admissions and advising roles in community college and liberal arts college settings. She lived and worked abroad in Brussels, Belgium, from 2002-2007. She currently serves at editor for NAFSA’s Guide to International Student Recruitment and previously served as editor for NAFSA’s IEM Spotlight newsletter from 2014-2016. Sandberg earned her BA in political science from Moravian College and an MA in international relations from the University of Kent.
South Puget Sound Community College
Amy VanSurksum is associate dean of international student services at South Puget Sound Community College in Olympia, Washington, where she oversees international recruitment and admissions; immigration advising and international student services; and study abroad. She received her bachelor's degree in Russian studies and international relations from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, and her master's degree in cultural anthropology from North Dakota State University in Fargo, North Dakota. VanSurksum has worked in international education at both the secondary and post-secondary levels since 1998. She has been an active NAFSA leader at both the regional and national levels, in addition to serving as a NAFSA Academy for International Education coach and a member of the NAFSA Trainer Corps. She currently serves as chair of the International Enrollment Management Knowledge Community.
