Welcome to the Texas NAFSA Page

2018 State Meeting Report

On April 12 and 13, more than 80 international education professionals traveled from across Texas to Prairie View A&M in Prairie View, Texas for the NAFSA Texas State Conference. On Thursday NAFSA hosted two workshops from its Core Education Program series. Sheena Connell, Assistant Director of International Student and Scholar Services at University of the Incarnate Word, taught F-1 Student Advising for Beginners. Bill Taylor, Director of International Student and Scholar Services at Texas A&M, and Kristalina Karsen, Business Analyst/People Soft II (SEVIS) at Houston Community College, led the F-1 Student Advising: Intermediate session. Both workshops were well attended and received a great deal of positive feedback.

Thursday evening PVAMU hosted a happy hour at the lovely Bistro 1876. Many scrumptious snacks, a few tasty beverages, and much good conversation were shared.

Friday morning began with breakfast and opening remarks from PVAMU’s Vice President for Student Affairs, Dr. Lauretta Byers. A full day of sessions across the Knowledge Communities (KCs) followed.

Over lunch Region III presented the NAFSA Texas State Award to Robert Watkins, Assistant Director of Admissions at the University of Texas at Austin. Robert was unable to attend the State Meeting to receive his award in person. But fellow UT colleague Laura Kaplan was kind enough to receive it in Robert’s place and deliver it to him in Austin.

The State Meeting coincided with a visit to PVAMU from Turkish Fulbright Scholar Dr. Seniye Vural, who presented on the role of self-regulation in Psychology and Education, and even showed us a few traditional Turkish dance moves.

A total of 17 international education organizations exhibited at the conference. A special addition to this year’s State Meeting was a Study Abroad Fair, open to all PVAMU students, faculty, and staff. Eight education abroad provider organizations participated in the Study Abroad Fair. Many PVAMU students attended and were able to get firsthand information about the study abroad opportunities available to them. Great big thanks to Region III Development Chair Blake Hart for organizing the State Meeting sponsorship, exhibitors, and Study Abroad Fair. Thanks also to the 2018 State Meeting Sponsors: Sol Education Abroad; CAPA, the Global Education Network; and Relation Insurance.

It is well worth noting that Prairie View A&M is the first Historically Black University (HBCU) to host a NAFSA Texas State Meeting. Evie Myers and her team at PVAMU were top-notch hosts. We want to thank them for sharing their spectacular campus and community with us, for ensuring that the conference ran smoothly, and for seeing to it that we had easy access to a constant supply of delicious snacks and coffee. We heart PVAMU, big time!

Please mark your calendars for the 2019 Texas State Meeting, which will be held on Thursday, March 7th and Friday, March 8th at the University of Texas at Arlington. We hope to see you there!
