Internationalization & Diversity and Inclusion
Los Angeles, California
Tuesday, May 30, 2017
universities around the world seek to create environments for social inclusion,
diversity and intercultural learning to flourish. How can international
educators lead higher education through these complex challenges? Keynote and
panel speakers will provide viewpoints on both the international and local
dynamics of this topic, including examples of international education’s role in
transforming institutions. Participants will also engage in round-table
breakout discussions with other SIOs and internationalization leaders to
network and discuss the opportunities and challenges for their campuses.
Symposium on Leadership will feature Gary Younge, an award-winning British journalist,
author, and broadcaster, who will offer his thoughts on the politics of
identity. Brenda J. Allen, University of Colorado-Denver, and Jonathan Jansen,
former Vice Chancellor and rector of the University of the Free State in South
Africa, will share their experiences and look at innovative and effective ways
to consider diversity and internationalization on campus.
The final SIO panel will feature best practices and
will include Stan Chung, Vice President for Education and Applied Research at
College of the Rockies (Canada); Angela Paiva, Associate Vice President for Academic
Affairs-International Programs at Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de
Janeiro (Brazil); and Wolfgang Schlör, Associate Provost for International Initiatives at Georgia State University.
