IEM Spotlight - August 2016

In 2016, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported that 65.3 million people have been forcibly displaced from their homes, the most in its recorded history. Horrendous acts of violence unfolding in Iraq and Syria have forced 3.4 million Iraqis and 4.9 million Syrians to seek refuge elsewhere. Both countries have young populations, with the mean age in the early 20s, as well as high literacy rates.
