Sora Friedman, PhD

Professor and Chair, International Education
SIT Graduate Institute

Sora Friedman has worked in the field of international education (IE) for over 30 years, focusing on the preparation of new professionals in the field, IE management training, exchange program management, public diplomacy, and international policy advocacy. She joined the SIT Graduate Institute faculty in 2005 and was an adjunct faculty member for three years before that. At SIT, Sora teaches, advises, and serves as chair of SIT’s IE master’s degree programs. In addition, Sora is often sought out as a peer reviewer and consultant to journals and professional training programs. Recent research includes an exploration of gender parity at senior leadership level in International Education, and coauthoring of Careers in International Education: A Guide for New Professionals (2019). Sora served on the Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship Knowledge Community (TLS KC) leadership team's chairstream from 2018-20, leading efforts as the 2019 TLS KC Chair. In 2015, Sora received the NAFSA Region XI James Leck Award for Distinguished Service. Previously, she served on NAFSA's New England region (Region XI) chairstream (2013–2015), as a member of CISabroad’s board of advisers (2008–2015), and as chair of NAFSA’s Trainer Corps (2011–2012) and Training Coordination Subcommittee (2008–2010). Sora has lived in Bolivia, Colombia, and England and is fluent in Spanish. She holds a doctorate in cultural studies, a master’s in international administration, a certificate in distance education, and a bachelor's degree in political science.
