Background Information

The Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) office distributed broadcast messages related to known problems with the performance of the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). In Broadcast Message 1201-04, SEVP provided information for open and resolved items. This broadcast provides updated information.

Updates

  • Failures of batch uploads and downloads – Despite correction of the problem on the evening of January 12, 2012, and validation testing that proved successful for that specific issue, SEVP continues to have batch upload and download performance issues.
  • Timeouts of batch uploads and downloads – Although monitoring of the system logs verifies that these connection resets no longer exist for the malfunctioning database port, SEVP continues to have timeout issues for batch uploads and downloads.

Open Item

  • Users experiencing an unexpected disconnection from the application – These timeouts may cause errors or slow response times when working in SEVIS Real-Time Interactive. Unrelated to the above resolved items, these timeouts may also cause latency or service unavailable messages when uploading or downloading via batch. These messages are intermittent and do not affect all users, but SEVP is aware of them and, with support of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Office of the Chief Information Officer, continues to investigate them. Until SEVP can determine the cause and implement a solution, the SEVIS Help Desk is tracking related calls/e-mails via Master Ticket #5594008 to monitor performance for further diagnostic evaluation.

In addition to any comments on this matter that would help SEVP with its diagnostic evaluation, please continue to report any issues to the SEVIS Help Desk. The SEVIS Help Desk is available between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. EDT either via phone at 800-892-4829 or via e-mail at [email protected].
