For Immediate Release

Washington (March 8, 2022) – Today, NAFSA: Association of International Educators shared its decision to bar the Russian Government’s participation in its 2022 Annual Conference & Expo. The following is a statement from Dr. Esther D. Brimmer, executive director and CEO.

“Russia’s aggressive violation of international law has created a severe security and humanitarian crisis that has raised the spectre of the world’s most dangerous weapons. Thus, NAFSA cannot accept the Russian Ministry of Education as an exhibitor at NAFSA’s 2022 Annual Conference & Expo at this time. In arriving at this decision, we are guided by our mission statement, which compels us to ‘aspire to enlightened international relations, globally engaged citizenry, and a more peaceful and just world.’ NAFSA is also guided by our statement of ethical principles, which specifically recognizes international law and clarifies that ‘we are responsible for our actions and for our decisions not to act.’

“Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and ongoing attacks are in direct opposition to these values.

“NAFSA strongly affirms the importance of international education as a force to foster understanding and respect among people of diverse backgrounds and perspectives. We welcome the participation of individuals from Ukraine and Russia at our annual gathering this May and look forward to a safe, respectful, and meaningful convening at NAFSA’s 2022 Annual Conference & Expo.”
