Here at NAFSA, we are committed to advancing international education in ways that are not only inclusive and impactful, but also environmentally responsible. As we come together for this year's annual conference, we recognize that our collective and individual choices—whether on how we travel, what we consume, or how we use resources—can make a meaningful difference.

Read on for concrete actions we can all take to do our part. Consider signing the pledge and sharing your commitment with colleagues and your professional network! Together, we can model our shared values and make a positive impact as we gather to learn, connect, and support the global education community.

The NAFSA 2026 Sustainability Pledge

As a member of the international education community, I pledge to participate in this conference with sustainability in mind, choosing actions that conserve resources, reduce waste, and support positive environmental change.

Travel, Transport, and Accommodation

  • If traveling to the conference by air, I will book nonstop flights whenever possible, as they produce fewer emissions than multi-stop flights.
  • When navigating within Orlando, I will walk, use public transport, or carpool with others when I can.
  • In my hotel, I will request reduced housekeeping services for my room to conserve water, energy, and cleaning resources.

Food and Dining

  • I will use a reusable bottle to reduce the need for single‑use plastics.
(The conference water bottle is made from recyclable aluminum.)
  • I will avoid food waste by taking only what I will eat and saving leftovers when possible.
  • To divert waste from landfills, I will use compost and recycling bins when they're available.

Waste Reduction

  • I will decline giveaways or swag I don't need, only accepting or buying items I know I'll use for a long time.
  • I will bring and use reusable bags, eliminating the need for disposable bags during the conference.
(If you forget to pack your reusable bags, the conference tote is available in the registration area and is made of fair-trade, sustainable materials.)
  • I will sort my waste into recycling, compost, and waste bins to help divert materials from landfills.

Energy Use

  • I will turn off lights, TVs, and electronics when leaving my hotel room or meeting spaces.
  • I will adjust my thermostat with energy use in mind, choosing moderate temperatures to reduce heating and cooling demand.
  • I will use natural light whenever possible instead of artificial lighting.
