On March 19, Representatives Sam Liccardo (D-CA-16), Jay Obernolte (R-CA-23), and Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL-8) introduced the bipartisan Keep Innovators in America Act (H.R. 8013). Representative Liccardo’s office issue a press release explaining the benefits of OPT to the United States and its vital role in attracting and retaining needed talent.

The bill allows international students to maintain student status while engaging in optional practical training (OPT). The bill charges the Department of Homeland Security Secretary to set the terms and conditions for engaging in OPT while also requiring employment be related to the student’s field of study. International students with pending or approved green cards may maintain student status.
