Courtney Erwin, JD
Courtney Erwin is a specialist working at the intersection of law, religion, culture, and education. She has over twenty years of experience working internationally with legal, political, religious, educational, and civil society actors and institutions.
In the field of international legal education, Courtney works with Seattle University School of Law to design and implement innovative international legal education programs between the United States and Morocco, including the Stevens Initiative-supported bi-lingual (Arabic-English) and virtual “The Legal Exchange” program. She also teaches courses in public international law and international relations at Mundiapolis University.
She has worked at the international level with institutions such as the International Criminal Court (ICC), UNICEF, the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNOHCHR), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF). In Qatar, Courtney built the legal protection program at Her Highness Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser’s foundation, Education Above All (EAA).
Courtney co-led the global initiative to develop the International Guidelines for Protecting Schools and Universities from Military Use during Armed Conflict and the Safe Schools Declaration, which have been endorsed by over one hundred and twenty states. To do this, she spent years working closely with diplomatic missions around the world as well as holding briefings with ministries of justice, education, foreign affairs, and defense in over twenty-five countries.
