John Trelawney Hoal
John Trelawney Hoal, PhD, is a professor of architecture and urban design at the Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Design of Washington University in St. Louis. Prior to that, he co-founded the City of St. Louis’s first Urban Design department and was the director of urban design. Hoal completed St. Louis’ first regional sustainability plan, the City of St. Louis’ first city-wide sustainability plan, and the Climate Action and Adaptation Plan. The projects led by him received over 60 design and planning awards at the local and state level, and 10 national and international awards. Hoal founded H3 Studio, a design research studio, and has completed numerous public space, arts and culture, urban design, landscape and greenway master plans, as well as sustainability, climate adaption and resiliency plans for cities. His recent international work includes transit corridor development planning in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; and Water Futures: Climate Adaptation Strategies for the Brisbane Watershed, Brisbane, Australia. Hoal has served on the International Review Team for the Development of the Hangzhou Central Business District, Hangzhou, China, and as an invited expert technical reviewer for Land and Livability National Innovation Challenge by the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore, Singapore.
