At the end of June 2007, the Department of State Exchange Visitor Program office notified exchange visitor programs designated in the college/university student, short-term scholar, professor, research scholar, specialist, international visitor, and government visitor categories that after August 31, 2007, DOS would no longer accept paper checks in payment of fees associated with requests for program extension, change of category, reinstatement, and reinstatement-update SEVIS status.

Instead, programs will have to sign up for a Pay.Gov account and make these payments through Pay.Gov. The e-mail included an explanatory letter and an Excel spreadsheet that programs would use to designate up to two individuals who would be authorized to pay through Pay.Gov. DOS asked programs to respond within 10 days, but will continue to accept responses after that.

Programs that have questions may contact the Department of State official identified in the notice.

NAFSA confirmed with DOS the authenticity of this communication, and expressed concern at the short turn-around time given, and the impact this change would have on programs' internal business processes.
