Today's campuses face many challenges to internationalization, including collaboration between international education professionals and faculty, deans, and provosts. Shifting priorities, internal and external pressures, and competition for scarce resources threaten internationalization efforts.

Learn how two institutions, both recipients of NAFSA's Senator Paul Simon Award for Campus Internationalization, facilitated cross-campus collaboration as part of their efforts to achieve comprehensive internationalization. Elizabeth Brewer and Gil Latz discuss how their schools operationalized and supported the strategic collaboration that enabled them to internationalize their respective institutions and how they maintain the momentum for collaboration.

Learning Outcomes

The webinar will provide participants with the following:

  • Crucial elements of effective cross-campus collaboration;
  • Understanding the impact of cross-campus collaboration on decision-making and resource allocation for internationalization;
  • Guidelines for applying a cross-campus collaboration strategy to achieve departmental and/or institutional goals for internationalization; and
  • Strategies for overcoming the primary obstacles to internationalization through cross-campus collaboration.

Presenters

Elizabeth Brewer
Beloit College

Brewer is the director of international education at Beloit College, where her work has focused on internationalizing the campus. To this end, she has worked with faculty colleagues to internationalize the curriculum and integrate study abroad into it, focused on strengthening the impact of study abroad on both students and the larger college, and worked to leverage partnerships and resources for internationalization. Prior to joining Beloit College in 2002, she held positions at the New School for Social Research, Boston University, and the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. Her publications include Integrating Study Abroad into the Curriculum: Theory and Practice Across the Disciplines, coedited with Kiran Cunningham, and "The Internationalization of the Curriculum," a chapter coauthored by Betty Leask appearing in the SAGE Handbook of International Higher Education. She holds a Ph.D. in German literature.

Gil Latz
Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis

Latz is currently the associate vice chancellor for international affairs at Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). The position includes a dual appointment as associate vice president for international affairs for the Indiana University system. He also has an academic appointment as a professor of geography in the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI. In 2011 the campus received the Senator Paul Simon Award for Comprehensive Internationalization. Prior to joining IUPUI, Latz served as vice provost for international affairs at Portland State, which received a Simon Award in 2009. Latz is also the 2011 recipient of Portland's Global Business Award, which recognizes leadership success. He received his doctorate and master's degrees in geography from the University of Chicago and his bachelor's in religion and English literature at Occidental College in Los Angeles.
