On Wednesday, September 9, 2020, NAFSA will launch a survey to better understand how COVID-19 and current measures being taken to mitigate its spread are impacting international education activities financially at U.S.-based institutions and organizations. This is a follow up to NAFSA’s April 2020 Financial Impact Survey, which found higher education lost approximately $1 billion as a result of shortened or cancelled study abroad programs in Spring 2020. As with the April survey findings, we will share the latest findings with Congress as they continue to debate additional economic stimulus funding.

This follow-up survey seeks information on the financial impact to operations resulting from ongoing actions in response to COVID-19, such as cancelled programs, telework and distance education policies, as well as housing and other financial support provided to international students and scholars unable to return home. All information will remain confidential and only be used in aggregate. The survey will remain open until 5:00 p.m. EDT September 22, 2020.

Survey links will be sent by email to senior leadership at U.S.-based higher education institutions and organizations. One consolidated institutional response is encouraged, where possible, if input from other offices and staff at your institution/organization are required to answer the survey. For reference, you may access a PDF copy of the full questionnaire.

If you have not received the invitation by Thursday, September 10 and believe you should have, contact the NAFSA Public Policy team.

Thank you for your assistance as we navigate through the crisis.
