Responsive Leadership

New in 2026! Responsive Leadership deepens and expands the leadership approach in NAFSA's Management Development Program (MDP) with it's focus on practical, people-centered management skills.

Responsive leadership is the ability to adapt your leadership approach to meet the evolving needs, capabilities, and motivations of the people you lead. Grounded in dynamic awareness, connected trust, and impactful action, responsive leadership enables managers to account for each individuals' skill-set, enthusiasm for the task, and the context within which they are operating both personally and professionally. By responding throughtfully to people and context, rather than reacting on autopilot, responsive leaders build trust, strengthen performance, and create healthier, more resilient teams.

Through this module participants will:

  • Adapt their leadership style to respond effectively to changing circumstances and challenges.
  • Support team members by better recognizing their skills, motivations, and needs.
  • Act with intention by engaging in honest, sometimes challenging conversations and practicing leadership in real-life scenarios.

Modality

Offered as a stand-alone for former MDP participants, this program will build on the foundations of the MDP to equip participants with the frameworks and skills to become effective Responsive Leaders.

Participants will complete a asynchronous online module and leadership self-assessment. Then, they'll come together virtually as a large group with experienced MDP Trainers to engage in further discussion, reflection, and have an opportunity to bring forth some real-life examples to work through.
