NAFSA is proud to introduce a new series of blog posts, written by NAFSA Global Partners. These institutions represent a broad range of perspectives, develop innovative approaches that enrich the field, and bring a wealth of expertise to the international education community.
When thousands of international educators gathered at the NAFSA 2025 Annual Conference & Expo in San Diego, California, earlier this year, a special group of high school students joined them. Thanks to the coordination of the San Diego Diplomacy Council and the generous sponsorship of Via TRM, this group was able to have an international experience in their own backyard.
For many of these students, it was their first time stepping into the world of international education. What they discovered was more than just a conference: It was an eye-opening experience that introduced them to global opportunities and sparked new ideas for their futures.
Read on to hear from three of the students about their experience.
Isis Rodriguez: "I Discovered New Paths for My Future"
Before attending, I didn't know what NAFSA was or what to expect. But from the moment we arrived, I was excited to see educators from around the world gathered in one place.
The activities were engaging and fun, and I especially enjoyed speaking with students from the United States. As a Mexican student, these conversations were valuable for practicing my English and learning about different cultures.
I discovered international opportunities for exchange programs, volunteer work, and even future degree paths. I am deeply grateful to the San Diego Diplomacy Council and Via TRM for making this experience possible—it gave me a clearer vision for my future and motivated me to explore global paths for education and growth.
Emily Alexa Jimenez Mata: "Be the First One to Lead by Example"
Some weeks before the conference, I felt stuck in the same routine and wondered how I could make a bigger impact. When my school launched a call for students to attend NAFSA, I applied, not knowing exactly what to expect.
At the conference, I had the chance to meet Dr. Fanta Aw, CEO of NAFSA. I asked her how I could inspire people around me to believe international opportunities are possible. Her advice stayed with me: "Be the first one to make it and lead by example."
Hearing those words—and seeing Dr. Aw's own journey—showed me that opportunities aren't always given but created. At NAFSA, I found people eager to share ideas, extend opportunities, and encourage me to dream bigger.
Melanie Reyes Tejeda: "Creativity Can Change the World"
For me, one of the highlights of NAFSA was the "Portal Experience" by Shared Studios, where I connected in real time with people across the world. We talked about creativity—not just as art, but as a way of thinking and solving problems.
To me, NAFSA embodied creativity. Schools, organizations, and volunteer programs all shared opportunities built by people thinking differently. Everyone I met was kind and inspiring. I left San Diego excited about the future and confident that young people like us can play an important role in shaping it.
Looking Ahead
For these students, attending NAFSA 2025 wasn't just about exploring careers or universities—it was about discovering their place in a global community.
With support from Via TRM and the San Diego Diplomacy Council, these young leaders experienced international education in action, connected with mentors and peers, and began to imagine new possibilities for their own futures.
Their stories remind us why investing in youth matters: When we open the door to global opportunities, students walk through with courage, curiosity, and hope.
