Competencies

This table prepared by NAFSA shows recent country-specific policies that continue to impact visa or immigration benefits for nationals of the listed countries. It is meant for quick-reference only. Consult NAFSA's detailed pages for more information on each policy.

Column Key

  • Travel Ban 1 - Refers to the ban on entry established by Presidential Proclamation 10949 of June 4, 2025. See NAFSA's page for details.
  • Travel Ban 2 - Refers to the ban on entry established by Presidential Proclamation 10988 of December 16, 2025. See NAFSA's page for details.
    • Note regarding the Travel Bans: "Full" Ban = Entry suspended for immigrants and all nonimmigrants. "Partial Ban" = Entry suspended for immigrants, and on B-1, B‑2, B-1/B-2, F, M, and J nonimmigrant visas (*Except for Turkmenistan, for which entry is suspended only of immigrants).
  • USCIS Pause - Refers to a "pause" that U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has placed on adjudication of pending benefit requests submitted by applicants whose citizenship or country of birth are from the countries identified in the two travel-ban proclamations. Note that while the travel ban affects only those traveling on a passport issued by one of the travel ban countries (and so individuals with dual nationality who were born in a travel ban country but are traveling on the passport issued by their non-travel-ban country of citizenship would avoid the travel ban), the USCIS adjudication hold applies more broadly "to aliens who list one of the high-risk countries as their Country of Birth or Country of Citizenship," regardless of whether they are in the United States on the passport of their non-travel-ban citizenship (See footnote 5 of the January 1, 2026 USCIS adjudication hold memorandum which clarifies that "This applies to aliens who list one of the high-risk countries as their Country of Birth or Country of Citizenship.") See NAFSA's page for details.
  • 75 Country IV Pause - Refers to a Department of State policy to pause issuance of immigrant visas (IV) from 75 countries. This policy does not affect issuance of nonimmigrant visas like B visitor visas, F student visas, etc.. See NAFSA's page for details.
  • F, J, H Visa Limits - Refers to Department of State amendments to the visa reciprocity schedule to limit the validity of many nonimmigrant visa types, typically to 3 months duration and only one entry, but there are variations. This table shows countries where F, J, or H visas are affected. See NAFSA's page for more details and other countries.
  • B Visa Bond - Refers to Department of State pilot program requiring B-1 and B-2 visa applicants traveling on a passport issued by one of these countries (identified by DOS as countries with high overstay rates or other conditions) to post a bond of $5,000, $10,000, or $15,000 to be issued the B-1/B-2 visa. The amount is determined at the time of the visa interview. See NAFSA's page for details.
