The conversion from CIP 2010 to CIP 2020 was accomplished in SEVIS Release 6.55, implemented on October 16, 2020. CIP codes are shared by all SEVIS categories, F, M, and J.

The following two-digit CIP codes include all four- and six-digit codes within those two-digit series in the CIP taxonomy, including any codes that are subsequently added under those two-digit series in the future:

  • 14 - Engineering
  • 26 - Biological and Biomedical Sciences
  • 27 - Mathematics and Statistics
  • 40 - Physical Sciences

The 2020 CIP added 17 new codes to those four 2-digit series, which will automatically be STEM-OPT eligible. In February, 2021, DHS updated the STEM Designated Degree Program List "to reflect changes made as part of the U.S. Department of Education’s 2020 Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) conversion. The STEM Designated Degree Program List is a complete list of fields of study that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) considers to be science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) fields of study for purposes of the 24-month STEM optional practical training extension. The updated list aligns STEM-eligible degrees and CIP codes with the revised Department of Education’s 2020 CIP conversion; DHS did not add or remove degrees from the list."

The original CIP Conversion 2020 SEVIS Help Hub article (it has since been edited) said:

"Of the 496 new CIP codes in the NCES 2020 CIP, 17 will automatically be included in the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List because they fall within one of the above four two-digit series. These include:

  • 14.0103, Applied Engineering
  • 14.0202, Astronautical Engineering
  • 14.0299, Aerospace, Aeronautical, and Astronautical/Space Engineering, Other
  • 14.4700, Electrical and Computer Engineering
  • 14.4701, Electrical and Computer Engineering
  • 14.4800, Energy Systems Engineering
  • 14.4801, Energy Systems Engineering, General
  • 14.4802, Power Plant Engineering
  • 14.4899, Energy Systems Engineering, Other
  • 26.0509, Infectious Disease and Global Health
  • 26.0913, Biomechanics
  • 26.1311, Epidemiology and Biostatistics
  • 27.0600, Applied Statistics
  • 27.0601, Applied Statistics, General
  • 40.0512, Cheminformatics/Chemistry Informatics
  • 40.1100, Physics and Astronomy (NAFSA note: this appears to be an error)
  • 40.1101, Physics and Astronomy

There are many other CIP codes that are not within the above two-digit series but that have been included on the STEM Designated Degree Program List as "related fields." These other fields are listed by their six-digit CIP code. The original CIP Conversion 2020 SEVIS Help Hub article (has since been edited) identified the following 11 changes to CIP codes and descriptions among those "related fields" included on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program list:

  • 2010 CIP Code and Title: 15.0503, Energy Management and Systems Technology. 2020 CIP, Code and Title changed to: 15.1701, Energy Systems Technology/Technician
  • 2010 CIP Code and Title: 15.0505, Solar Energy Technology/Technician. 2020 CIP, same Title, Code changed to: 15.1703, Solar Energy Technology/Technician
  • 2010 CIP Code and Title: 43.0106, Forensic Science and Technology. 2020 CIP, same Title, Code changed to: 43.0406, Forensic Science and Technology
  • 2010 CIP Code and Title: 43.0116, Cyber/Computer Forensics and Counterterrorism. 2020 CIP, same Title, Code changed to: 43.0403, Cyber/Computer Forensics and Counterterrorism
  • 2010 CIP Code and Title: 51.2502, Veterinary Anatomy. 2020 CIP, same Title, Code changed to: 1.8105, Veterinary Anatomy
  • 2010 CIP Code and Title: 51.2503, Veterinary Physiology. 2020 CIP, same Title, Code changed to: 1.8109, Veterinary Physiology
  • 2010 CIP Code and Title: 51.2504, Veterinary Microbiology and Immunobiology. 2020 CIP, same Title, Code changed to: 1.8107, Veterinary Microbiology and Immunobiology
  • 2010 CIP Code and Title: 51.2505, Veterinary Pathology and Pathobiology. 2020 CIP, same Title, Code changed to: 1.8108, Veterinary Pathology and Pathobiology
  • 2010 CIP Code and Title: 51.2506, Veterinary Toxicology and Pharmacology. 2020 CIP, same Title, Code changed to: 1.8111, Veterinary Toxicology and Pharmacology
  • 2010 CIP Code and Title: 51.2510, Veterinary Preventive Medicine, Epidemiology, and Public Health. 2020 CIP, same Title, Code changed to: 1.8110, Veterinary Preventive Medicine, Epidemiology, and Public Health
  • 2010 CIP Code and Title: 51.2511, Veterinary Infectious Diseases. 2020 CIP, same Title, Code changed to: 01.8106, Veterinary Infectious Diseases

There are also several new codes in the 2020 CIP for majors that in the 2010 CIP were categorized under STEM-eligible codes, but whose new code in the 2020 CIP are without a 2010-2020 crosswalk and which places them outside the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. For example, the 2020 CIP now has specific codes for Data Science (30.70xx) and Data Analytics (30.71xx) which are under the "Multi/Interdisciplinary Studies" 2-digit code 30 and do not appear in the 2020 DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List.
